Bohemia Sekt sells 18 million bottles of sparkling wine in 2018

Starý Plzenec, 23 Jan 2019In 2018 Bohemia Sekt sold over 18 million bottles of sparkling wine on the Czech market, a 12% increase compared to the previous year. Bohemia Sekt Demi Sec remains the most popular sparkling wine with close to 7.5 million bottles sold. A major, nearly 20% leap was registered by Bohemia Sekt Prestige, a line of sparkling wines produced using the traditional method of bottle fermentation.

“Given the overall labour shortage and the anticipated logistical peak in the final weeks of the year, we worked with our sales partners to spread seasonal sales of sparkling wine out over a longer period so that before Christmas and New Year’s, plenty of goods would be ready on the shelves in time. We achieved this goal and there were enough goods in stores during the season,” Bohemia Sekt CEO Ondřej Beránek explained.

The growing popularity of Italian Prosecco also supported sales in the sparkling wine category. Sales of Mionetto, a brand that Bohemia Sekt distributes on the Czech market, rose by more than 40% year-on-year.

In the still wine category, sales of Habánské Sklepy, Víno Mikulov, Chateau Bzenec, Vinařství Pavlov and other brands exceeded 10.5 million bottles. This nearly 6% decline compared to 2017 was due to the termination of boxed wine production as well as the shortage of domestic grapes from the previous two weaker harvests.

“Our long-term objective is to sell products of the highest quality – quality wines and wines with special attributes. Evidence that this strategy is proving successful can be found in growing sales of our premium line and in the numerous awards we have received at domestic and foreign wine competitions,” Beránek notes.

The company sold almost 29 million bottles on the Czech market, a year-on-year gain of 3%.
