Starý Plzenec, 8 January 2018 – Bohemia Sekt sold over 16 million bottles of sparkling wine and other sparkling beverages on the Czech market in 2017, a year-on-year increase of six percent. The company thus surpassed its previous record-breaking sales of 1999, when people celebrated the arrival of the new millennium. The sales reflected the positive mood among Czech consumers.

The company was also successful in the category of still wines. Sales of the Habánské sklepy, Víno Mikulov, Chateau Bzenec and Vinařství Pavlov products jumped by more than 8%, reaching over 11 million bottles in total. “Although we stopped producing spirits early last year, the company’s sales in the Czech Republic last year still experienced growth in excess of 2% year-on-year,” said Bohemia Sekt director Ondřej Beránek, adding that most of the production was delivered to the Czech market, with only a small percentage of bottles sold abroad.

As a result the company has a successful year under its belt, with total sales coming to almost 29 million bottles.

“The increase in sales of sparkling wines, other sparkling beverages and still wines was evident throughout the year. We are thus fulfilling our long-term vision, in which sparkling wines are not just a drink for festive occasions like New Year’s Eve, but can be your companion all year round,” Beránek commented.

Investing in vineyards and expanding production capacity

The company continued to expand its vineyards in 2017, planting another 40 hectares. It now manages a total of 520 hectares of vineyards in Southern Moravia, thus nearing its target of owning 600 hectares by 2020.

Bohemia Sekt’s other investments last year went into the production of sparkling wines in Starý Plzenec. These included new fermentation tanks, which increased capacity for producing sparkling wines using the Charmat method. This year the company plans to invest in a new grape processing centre at the Víno Mikulov winery as well as continuing the expansion of its own vineyard acreage.

“We believe that positive developments will continue in years to come. That’s why we need to invest in the production capacity of our wineries now,” Beránek concluded.
