Kamil Prokeš declared Czech Republic’s best sommelier for 2019

Prague, 23 October 2019This year’s 22nd annual Bohemia Sekt Trophée – Sommelier of the Year Czech Republic competition has produced a winner: Kamil Prokeš, the owner of the Velké Němčice vineyards. At the day-long tournament, which culminated in a gala finale at the National Theatre’s New Stage, he convinced the jury that his knowledge and skills made him the best candidate for the title of Sommelier of the Year 2019. Serving on this year’s international jury were three presidents: International Sommelier Association President Andrés Rosberg; Sommeliers Association of the Czech Republic President Martin Pastyřík; and Slovak Sommelier Association President Beáta Vlnková.

Second place in the competition went to Libuše Vrbová from U Vrbů winery in Hustopeče, who also won the award for the audience favourite. Matouš Forman from Californian Wines took third place.

The 17 professionals participating in the competition were tested on their knowledge, performed a blind tasting, had to describe and identify wine samples, and provided wine and/or sparkling wine service, including food pairings. The three competitors who advanced to the gala final that evening also had to give a wine presentation to two diners. The couple whom the sommeliers served on stage in front of the audience during the final were popular actress and comedienne Iva Pazderková and actor Vladimír Polívka.

“Several competitive events awaited those who advanced to the final round, including a test of knowledge, a blind tasting, wine or sparkling wine service, communication with the diners, and wine and food pairings. Attending for the first time was the guest of honour, who sat on the jury that decided on this year’s winner – International Sommelier Association President Andrés Rosberg,” said Ivo Dvořák, vice president of the Sommeliers Association of the Czech Republic, which oversaw the event.

“National wine tasting competitions are beneficial not only because they produce a winner who receives acclaim in that country, can use the Sommelier 2019 title and represent the country at the international championships. The competitions are attended by many other professionals who have spent a long time learning, tasting and training for the competition, thus increasing their professional skills. Here is where the great benefit of wine tasting tournaments lies: through their participants, the competitions increase the quality of this profession throughout the country,” explained Andrés Rosberg, president of the International Sommelier Association.

“This year we got to see the 22nd annual tournament of the best Czech sommeliers, and I am pleased to say that once again the quality of the participants was very high. This is good news for restaurant owners and wine growers alike. The sommelier is the person who stands before restaurant diners and represents the wine grower; their work can exponentially increase the wine experience – or have the exact opposite effect. I am happy that we could see many professionals who have a love for wine and respect for our wine growers’ work,” Bohemia Sekt CEO Ondřej Beránek said when detailing why his company supported the competition.

The winner of the competition received a challenge cup from Moser Glass, a tastevin – the symbol of sommeliers – by jewellery maker Lada Vosejpková, a cash prize, and gifts from the event’s partners.

The Bohemia Sekt Trophée - Sommelier of the Year Czech Republic competition is organised by the Sommeliers Association of the Czech Republic, which aims to develop the wine tasting profession and support training and education for sommeliers. The main partner of the competition is BOHEMIA SEKT. Support is provided by the Wine Fund of the Czech Republic. Additional partners are BS Vinařské potřeby, Karlovarská Korunní, the Czech Association of Hotels and Restaurants, Makro and the National Theatre. The media partner is Wine and Degustation magazine.
