This year’s vintage offers diversity and varying quality

Starý Plzenec, 16 October 2018 – Most of this year’s grapes have been harvested at Bohemia Sekt. Winegrowers started to gather early and white varieties in the latter half of August, and now they are nearing the end of the late white and red harvests. The weather this year was unusual and the effect of rainfall differences this autumn is making it particularly difficult to evaluate this year’s vintage for the entire South Moravian region.

“In terms of the whites, this year will be difficult to describe. The situation is different for winemakers in the Znojmo, Mikulov, Velké Pavlovice and Moravian Slovakia regions. Precipitation varied in each sub-region, especially the September rains. In some areas rain diluted the low sugar content in early varieties, in others it caused mould and mildew, but in yet others the rain had a positive effect and helped late maturing varieties, and in the end the sugar content was quite high,” Josef Svoboda, Vineyard Manager of the Bohemia Sekt group, explains.

The hot, dry summer brought another noteworthy feature to this year’s vintage. The grape sugar content is often higher and acidity lower than usual for Moravian grapes.

“We can predict that the characteristics of this year’s wines will be similar to wines from the southern regions of Europe. However, an exact comparison cannot be made because we generally grow different varieties in the Czech Republic,” Josef Svoboda notes, adding that although work in the vineyards is coming to an end, a no less important part of the winemaking process still awaits. What happens in the cellars will decide how 2018 vintage wines will taste.
