PRESS RELEASE

Czechs riding a wave of bubbly, annual domestic sales top 22 million bottles

Starý Plzenec, 7th July 2019 – According to statistics from the Czech Customs Administration, 22.2 million bottles of sparkling wine were supplied to the Czech market in 2018, up 15% compared to 2017. This is the highest increase the market has experienced over the past 19 years.

Czech customs data indicate that sparkling wine has become increasingly popular among Czechs since 2000. Sales have accelerated since 2015 and leapt a record-breaking 15.3% in 2018 compared to the previous year. Over the past five years, sales of sparkling wine in the Czech Republic have skyrocketed 44%. Whereas in 2014 the average Czech drank 1.4 standard 0.75-litre bottles of sparkling wine per year, today they consume more than two bottles.

“Like the entire sparkling wine segment, our sales moved in a positive direction last year. We are grateful that Czechs are remaining faithful to the Bohemia Sekt brand. Last year we sold a record-breaking nearly 13 million bottles,” Ondřej Beránek, CEO of Bohemia Sekt, a long-term leader on the sparkling and still wine market, said in response to the customs statistics. “However, I should note that before the end of the year, our customers purchased a certain amount to stock up for this year, and this will influence the statistics for 2019 and the year-on-year comparison,” Beránek noted.

When selecting sparkling wines, Czech continue to opt for Demi-Sec. “Bohemia Sekt Demi-Sec has long been number one in our portfolio, with sales reaching 7.5 million bottles last year. At the same time an increasing number of people are not afraid to try new tastes. One example is interest in Bohemia Sekt La Fleur, but there has also been a shift towards single-varietal sparkling wines like Riesling. Moreover, we have seen long-term growth in sales of alcohol-free sparkling wines. The perception of sparkling wine is gradually changing from a beverage only for celebrations into a beverage for any pleasant occasion,” adds Ondřej Beránek.
